Mickey Mouse in the House

Hi Everyone,
Yes I know it has been sometime since I had a creation to share, you all know how life can take over and ones hobbies have to take the back burner.

Over the last few months I have managed a child free holiday thanks to my wonderful Husband for manning the home fires. I am a very Lucky lady.

Last week I was asked to create my first paid cake creation, for one very excited two year old boy.
The only instructions were Mickey Mouse please! so my mind went into over drive and off to the cakestuff website I went to purchase what I need to make Mickey come alive.

I got a wee bit carried away, the cake became a lot bigger that first planned oh but I did enjoy making it.

I started with the face and created the cake around this, I would love to show you photos of each step of this cake but Master One was sick at the time of this creation so taking happy snaps along the way did not happen.

The cake itself was three layers two of chocolate and one of red coloured butter cake. The icing was a white chocolate and coconut buttercream.

So here is the finished product Mickey Mouse is in the house!

I have learnt a great deal from this cake creation and I am loving seeing my visions come to life.

I want to thank Jo and family for letting me be part of Daniel's 2nd birthday celebrations.

Seventy Five going on Five

Well my parents have just been to visit from the beautiful Hawkes Bay and as usual Canterbury put on some fantastic weather and a fair bit of ground shaking to go with it!
They had a full on week with the four year old and one year old running them ragged.
While they were visiting it was my Dad's 75th birthday so one cannot let this occasion go by with out a cake baking session.
Dad has a love affair with teddy bears so we had to add this to the cake in some way.

And of course we had to have Dad (Grandad) on the cake too!

Here is a picture of the final Product, Dad cannot remember the last time he had a cake so thought I would revisit his younger years.............

The cake it self was a butter cake with added Banana covered with a Coconut butter cream and for added excitement it was three shades of Green ( me playing with the gel food colouring)

Dad was wrapped with his cake and was most impressed with the teddy bear I think I made his day.

Will soon have to make a rainbow cake can't wait to experiment further with the cake colour.

Gift Giving

Imagine the surprise and delight evoked by the gift of a cake complete with an exquisite topping, to mark a special occasion. It is a moment to treasure. Baking for a celebration is a pleasure in itself. There is the anticipation of choosing the recipe and working out the design for the occasion! I have had the pleasure lately of being able to make gifts for my dear friends, any excuse I say!

This wee gift cake was chocolate two tier, for my good friend Nic her favourite colour is blue! I really enjoyed making this cake was a bit rushed making this one as I had sick children during the week. Having a spare moment was few and far between.

Over the last two weeks I have had a leave pass to have friday nights out for tea with friends thanks to my fantastic hubby!!
The pass this week was my girlfriend Paula's 40th Birthday so I couldn't let that one go past without a mention.
We had a fabulous dinner out and think we could have talked all night, there is nothing like a good catch up.

This time I attempted cake pops for the first time, I am in love with this cool change from a plain cake.
Was far more intensive that I thought it would be and of course I ate far too much of this mixture as I was creating oops! The cake pop flavour was dark chocolate peppermint mudcake.  And can you believe it Paula's favourite colour is Blue too!!!

Thanks Ladies for the pleasure of being able to create gifts for you both. I am looking forward to improving on the above creations in the near future so watch this space.

A Reason to Bake

Hi everyone, well the school holidays are nearly over for kiwi families.   I have just had the most fabulous 4 days with my Niece and two Nephews from the deep south.
Before their arrival I knew I had to do some baking of some sort. Having to get ready for them and dealing with my young family I was short on spare time so quick and easy biscuits came to mind!

Yummy Chocolate Chippy Cookies I can never resist the chance to taste test of the raw cookie dough Oops Naughty it is sooooo tasty!

All cooked, just one more taste test!!! nothing beats a steaming warm cookie with the chocolate still soft hehehe.

The finished product ready for the arrival of the taste testers, they were a hit, we had to limit them a wee bit as I am sure they would have been eaten in one sitting if I had let them.

My weekend baking was not over yet, I decided I felt like some Lollie Log too, and if I made it for the Family then it would be all gone before I ate too much.

So while preparing the ingredients for my Lollie Log I decided to make my own version called Mrs Sweet's Surprise Slice as pictured below.

Recipe as follows

Mrs Sweets Surprise Slice

1 packet of Malt Biscuits (crushed)
1 packet of vanilla Biscuits (crushed)
1 cup chocolate Drops/chips
1 packet of Fruit Puffs (chopped small)
1 Can of Highlanders condensed milk
250g Butter

Icing:
2 Tablespoons of Butter (softened)
2 cups Icing sugar
2 tablespoons of milk or water may need more to get correct consistency to you liking.
2 tablespoons for coconut sprinkling on top more if you wish

Place all prepared dry ingredients in a large bowl.
Melt butter and condensed milk together allow to cool slightly (so chocolate doesn't melt)
Add wet ingredients to dry and stir well.
Add to lined baking tray (mine is 30cm by 15cm) press down with your hand,  chill for 30 mins or while you make icing.
Once icing has been smoothed over the top and sprinkled with coconut add to the fridge to set firm.

Hope you all get a chance to try this yummy slice it is a hit with every age group!
Happy eating everyone.
